1. E te Toka Ingoa nui, Onamata iho ra, Moku nei I wahia ai, Huna iho au e koe, Tahia ake oku he, Ki te toto ki te wai. 2. Horekau e ea I a au, O te ture tikanga, Ahakoa au oke nui, Tangi tonu ranei au, Mau anake hoki ra, Mau ka ora ai ahau. 3. Tenei au te tu kau nei, Hipokina iho ra, Tenei au te mate nei, Whakaorangia e koe, Oku kino oku he, Mau e Ihu e horoi. 4. I ahau e ora nei, A te wa e mate ai, Ina piki ake au, Ki te Ao e ngaro nei, E te Toka Ingoa nui, Huna iho au e koe. Amine. |
Translation of the Maori version
1. Almighty God the Rock, of ancient times, had drawn me apart. Hide me in you, Remove all my sins, With your blood and water. 2. I was unable to pay, towards your laws I made many attempts Yet could only weep, Only you alone, can grant me life 3. Here I stand afar off, Cover me As I am of ill health, Heal me, From my evil ways, Wash me afresh. 4. While I am yet alive Then the time to die when I’m lifted up To that unseen world, The Almighty Rock, Will hide me within him. Amen. |
Traditional/original English words
1. Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save from wrath and make me pure.
2. Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
3. Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.
4. While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eye-strings break in death,
When I rise to worlds unknown,
And behold Thee on Thy throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

Other information
Reverend Augustus Montague Toplady wrote the hymn "Rock of Ages" in 1763. It was published 12 years later in The Gospel Magazine in 1775. The story goes that the Reverend Toplady was walking along the gorge of Burrington Combe in England when he found himself in the middle of a huge thunderstorm. With rain lashing down, he ran into a nearby cave for shelter. While waiting for the storm to clear, he thought about how just as the rocks were providing him shelter from the storm, so to does Jesus, our rock, provide us shelter from the "storms of life" if we choose to hide ourselves in Him.
